Second 12,000-Square-Foot Building Also Planned At Site for Future Retail/Office Space
LATHAM (November 5, 2002) - Commercial real estate development company First Columbia has designed a new 12,000-square-foot "chateau-styled" building for Kimberley's-A Day Spa Ltd.
The full service spa, presently located at 637 New Loudon Road, will move into a two-story structure at 982 New Loudon Road (across from the Century House Inn) constructed by Bette & Cring by late spring 2003. A groundbreaking ceremony took place at 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1.
"After 16 years in its existing building, the spa outgrew its site," said Chris Bette, director of development services at First Columbia, explaining that a second 12,000-square-foot building housing offices, a flower shop, gourmet delicatessen and other upscale shops is also planned for 982 New Loudon Road in the coming months. "One of our main objectives with the new spa building is to make it feel warm and homelike for clients. Toward that end, our design will feature tiled floors, mahogany wood on the walls and have an `old world' feel."
According to Kimberley Comiskey, president of Kimberley's-A Day Spa Ltd., one of the highlights of the new building's first floor will be a comfortable living room/reception area where guests can relax before appointments. The room will feature a cozy fireplace and serve homemade juices and freshly brewed specialty teas and coffees.
Also on the first floor will be office space, a boutique, a 14-chair hair salon, 10 manicuring stations and a nail department where guests can receive Kimberley's signature lavender hand treatment or Dead Sea salt rub at six pedicure chairs.
Women and men in search of soothing baths and wraps will receive their treatments on the spacious second floor. There they will find 10 massage rooms, a steam room, six tub rooms, seven facial rooms, a waxing room and dedicated area for seaweed and mud treatments. In addition, the floor will house a conference room and offices for the spa's naturopathic doctor and holistic nutritionist.
"Upstairs, guests who are staying for the day can also receive their catered lunches or relax in our specially designed second floor living room," said Comiskey, noting that in addition to the 12,000-square-feet of space on the second and first floors, the building will house storage, laundry facilities and an employee break/locker room in its 6,000-square-foot basement.
"Throughout the year we cater to several thousand clients who visit us either for special occasions or on a weekly or monthly basis," she continued. "To better meet their needs in our new space, we plan to increase our staff from 75 employees to around 125. These new hires will be in all facets of our business - from front desk assistants to massage therapists."
The construction of the new Kimberley's-A Day Spa facility is the fourth building First Columbia has constructed in Latham over the past two years.
In 2000, First Columbia finished work on 26 Century Hill Drive, one of three buildings at Century Hill Plaza - a state-of-the-art office park. New York Life, the nation's largest mutual insurance company, is the building's anchor tenant and occupies the entire third floor. Other companies with office space include: First Columbia, Anderson, Moschetti and Taffany, a law firm; NORESCO, a national energy services company based in Westborough, MA; and, two other Fortune 500 firms - GE Financial Assurance and St. Paul Fire & Marine Life Insurance Company.
The growing office complex's other tenants include the New York State School Boards Association, which moved its state headquarters to 24 Century Hill Plaza (45,000-square-feet) last December. Meanwhile, BlueShield of Northeastern New York relocated from Wolf Road to the 80,000-square-foot 30 Century Hill Plaza in July.
